WIAW on tuesday

Hello, hello! Another Wednesday has landed on our doorstep, so you know what that meeeeaaaannnssss…

WIAW hosted by Jennnnnn

Today I’m bringing you my eats from Tuesday (aka: yesterday). Who doesn’t love a little gander into what other people are eating?! Especially those Tuesday eats, love me some Tuesday eats…

Breakfast (9:00am)

  • One juicy-ripe nectarine (don’t mind how weird my hand looks for some reason hahaha!)

  • Hot oatmeal with a little brown sugar on it (from Timmy’s since we were still on the road coming back home) – unpictured
  • Iced coffee with vanilla stevia and coconut milk – unpictured (my bad!)
Lunch (12:30pm)
  • Mixed greens salad with sweet onion, carrot, cucumber and avocado.
  • On the side, an Amy’s organic veggie burger topped with some Daiya pepperjack cheese and Dad’s bbq sauce

  • 2 squares of chocolate with sea salt (pretty much addicted)

Snack (2:30pm)

  • apple with PB (you can’t go wrong)

Snack (4pm)

  • Luna bar (chocolate dipped coconut)

Dinner (6:30pm)

  • roasted potato and green bean salad + a million extra potatoes eaten on the side 😉

In the day, I also drink about 17 liters of water, just for good measure 😉

I still like to think of myself as a newbie to WIAW (hello! third post), but here’s a look at the other two that I did partake in, in case you missed them:

And there you have it, another (WIA)Wednesday, another fun-filled food experience with all the other lovely bloggers. Until next time my friends, keep tracking what you eat and make me drool over!

Like:
Michelle’s dinner and dessert or Jessica’s pancakes (which I’m so making in T-minus 15 minutes) or Chelsea’s pancakes (which look so tempting, too!) or Jemma’s dhal curry or Donna’s chickpeas or Corey’s skinny pina colada (or four) or… I think you get the picture – a lot of people have great eats. Make sure to check them out 😉

It’s officially pancake time over here! Have a great Wednesday!

Quote of the day:

“Agree to these ground rules: Be curious, conversational and real. Don’t persuade or interrupt. Listen, listen, listen.”

my wallet hates me

Hello guys! Happy Tuesday to everyone. Might I just add quickly that my fave part about Tuesday’s is the fact that it’s cheap night at the movies! Does anyone else have this in their area? For us, it means something like $4.50 movie prices – and how can you argue with that? That’s right, you can’t! I know my hubby would hit up the movies every Tuesday, if it weren’t for work…and if my wallet didn’t hate me for the following!

If you read my last post then you know that we were taking a trip to Buffalo, NY to do some shopping. Even though the money we used for this excursion was set aside, it still is hard for me to cope with. If you’re laughing right about now and asking if I get anxiety, the answer is yes.

This is why I need the husband to reassure me a million times that:
a) what I bought was ok;
b) it was worth the trip to get the things; and,
c) I look good in the stuff I bought (hey, I need to make sure a) and b) make sense!)

Anxiety aside, here’s a look at our little getaway:

The first hotel:

A special little something we saw in between the hotel buildings:

Where we ate dinner (on the 7th floor, facing the falls!):

A craaaazy hotel (still boggles my mind whoever created this):

Some drinks while we wait for our table…yes, please!

The view from the restaurant overlooks the falls, but lack of sitting at a closer table and constant mist coming off the falls made this pic not so easy to tell where we are (sorry!):

Niagara Falls shot fail #2:

Some parrot action:

Burning off dinner:

Nutso parrot swinging back and forth like it’s his thang:

Downtown at the falls:

Doesn’t the BK look pretty cool?!

Successful falls shot #1 (crossing the border into the states):

Hotel #2:

The damage:

I also picked up some Luna bars in flavours that we don’t have in Canada.

The foodie in me wanted to buy 10 of each flavour (including other flavours that I didn’t buy and haven’t tried either), but the sensible shopaholic (total oxymoron, I know) in me, said just buy a few…then make a trip back over the border in a few weeks, if need be haha.

All in all, I got some good stuff, but a girl could always use more 😉 – especially if it’s not as my wallet’s expense.

Questions of the day:

What are your fave stores?
What are some of the best deals you’ve gotten/seen this year?
Abercrombie and Hollister both had 50% off jeans.
If you had $2000 to spend at a mall, how would you spend it?
Definitely some shoes, a nice blazer, dress, casual T’s, dress tops, and workout gear

buffalo getaway!

I find that getaways are always better when you really need them. And, even though the husband and I just road tripped together last weekend, we haven’t really had the chance for too many getaways this summer.

With school quickly approaching, I knew time was running out for one last quick trip. But, where?

Easy. The states. The shopping is way better, plus it’s fun to do, and we live in Southern Ontario, so super easy to get to. We started looking at hotel prices a few nights ago, since we knew that we had Sunday and Monday night free to go down. I found this in my junk mail while hotel searching:

Although it’s Niagara Falls, Canada, we decided this deal was too good to pass up, so the plan is: staying there tonight, then bright and early going over the border and staying at a hotel in Buffalo tomorrow night. From one hotel to the other is only 20 miles, so really, not a huge deal. But speaking of huge deal, how about that one ^^ above! It comes with a $40 voucher for the Keg, which we’ll eat at tonight. But, since I don’t eat meat, I’m thinking the hubby can have the whole $40 voucher, and even if I get a cheaper veggie dish from there, our bill won’t be that expensive! Also, comes with a $20 game card – you know where I’ll be tonight 🙂 and another $20 voucher to the Outback. So much food and fun, so little time!

The deal we got on the hotel in Buffalo was through Expedia, which I can’t take credit for finding; it was all my mom. See, she will also be staying there on Monday night with my siblings because they also need to do some back-to-school shopping (note: mine is more just shopping, but I did joke to the husband that I need a new lunch pale…he laughed). It will be nice to hook up with my fam after spending a night alone together!

Money is all switched over, now to make sure we have passports ready. Wouldn’t that be terrible if you forgot your passport and had to drive all the way back home to get it? If my brother-in-law is reading this, then he knows what I’m talking about, right D?? Which reminds me…I better go and find our passports.

And, found them! 🙂

Stores/places I need to visit in the states:

  • MAC – new bronzer, eye liner and we’ll see what else catches my eye 😉
  • Shoes – would love another pair of TOMS + one other pair (hopefully find a good deal)
  • Jeans – preferable Guess (skinny’s + boot cut)
  • Michael Kors – I’d love to find a deal on a shirt from here
  • Victoria’s Secret – $10 gift card which I want to put towards a new bra purchase *yeah yeah*
  • PF Changs for some sweet happy hour treats

I will actually take pictures this getaway and post them. Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend and stays safe from Miss Irene, who seems to be affecting a lot of areas.

Check out my ‘workouts’ section to see what I’ve done this week! Now what can I do to step it up next week?

bummer

So…it’s Saturday! How does everyone feel about it being the last weekend in August? I can’t believe this month is almost over. That means September is just around the corner. It also means school starts soon, which kinda scares me! Good thing for the blog as my outlet!

This post was never intended to start with this ‘bummer’ news (mainly because I just found something in my email), but here it goes:

I just checked my email, and in my junk mail I noticed this subject line: Mono Cliffs Run Cancelled.

This was a 5-mile run I had planned to run a few weeks before my half marathon. Since this race is now cancelled, I’m not sure what to do. I really thought I would have one smaller run done before my half. The thing that was going to be so awesome about this one, was that it was right near where I live (the whole reason I chose to register for it in the first place). So, this is how the email started:

Because of events beyond our control, The Dufferin Bruce Trail Club has had to cancel the Mono Cliffs Run  for this year, scheduled for September 10, 2011.

I wish I could find out why they decided to cancel it. Oh well, maybe next year? So now, with the countdown on to my first half marathon, now I’m wondering if I should try and find a 5K or 10K instead, just so I can get the feel of what running in a race feels like. Thoughts?

Another bummer is I’m having a little pain from running. Here, to be exact:

Any suggestions on what to do to help it? Strengthen it? Exercise-wise what to do about it? It hurts when I’ve been sitting too long (read: my body is telling me to not be a lazy bum today) or when I’m straightening my leg (let’s say from a 90 degree angle) and it starts hurting halfway between being straight and being bent. How awful is that for a description?! If anyone has any tips, I’d love to hear them!

The pain was so worth it for this speed interval run, though:

Time: 40 mins
Distance completed: 4.97 miles

I know my pace is gradually increasing because when I slowed down for my 3 minute intervals at 6.5mph, that actually felt slow to me. I swear it was just over a year ago when I thought running for an hour was good – yet, that was at 5.2mph. It’s funny how things change and now I don’t go by time, but by distance!

Then I went on the StairMaster for 10 mins, just to mix it up!

I think I better go and either fix this knee problem by doing some strength training or go shopping because my bum (speaking of ‘bummer’) gets too use to sitting on the couch! And Rex’s too…

mid-yawn

I also have one of those $2 receipts from Starbucks, where if you bring your blue receipt in after 2pm, you get any cold grande drink for $2…and I thiiiink I might just have to use it!

Question of the day:

Have you heard Kanye and Jay-Z’s new album Watch the Throne? I admit that I really enjoy it and am sorta, kinda hooked on a few songs already!

would you rather…

Do you ever catch yourself saying, “I’d rather be doing that because [yadda, yadda]”? Or even, “I’m glad I’m doing this rather than that“?

Yeah, that’s what I thought! 😉

We’re always comparing situations; especially if it means making ours seem a little more bearable.

I’ve seen it on Courtney’s blog before, at the end of her posts she does, ‘Would You Rather’ questions. So, I thought it’d be fun to do a whole post dedicated to these questions that make you go hmmmmm.

I love them, personally, because they make you think – some more obvious than others, but some where you can’t choose either!

And feel free to choose a few Q’s in this post and answer in the comments section!

Would You Rather…

Own a ski lodge or a surf camp? Surf camp, for sure.

Go without television or junk food for the rest of your life? Let’s see if you can guess the answer…

My organic veggie mix for the week...ie: not junk food.

Find true love or 10 million dollars? Well, since I already found true love, technically it’s outta the question, so 10 million dollars, please 🙂

Would you rather have a kangaroo or koala as your pet? Hmmm…what to say. I mean, koala’s are cute…

But then again, so are kangaroos!

Okaay, okaaaay…I choose koala!

Be a giant hamster or a tiny rhino? Tiny rhino, by far!

Never use the internet again or never watch TV again? Never watch TV, since you can practically get anything from TV on the internet! I soooo trick the system!

Invent a cure for cancer or a cure for AIDS? I’d have to say cancer.

Not be able to use your phone or your e-mail? Another toughie, but I’d have to say not use email, since again, I’m tricking the system and can get it from my phone *hehe*

Be 3 feet taller or 3 feet shorter? 3 feet taller; then I could model. I kid people!!

Be a deep sea diver or an astronaut? Astronaut, since breathing under freaks the crap outta me. Plus, I wanna try space ice-cream #justsaying.

Always win pie-eating contests or always win wheelbarrow races? So the pie-eating contest. I’ve always thought I could dominate in a lemon meringue pie-eating contest – I’m never going to test that theory though.

Be a dog named Killer or a cat named Fluffy? Fluff McGuff. Need I say more…

sooo my boyfriend.

Workout with Physique 57 or go to the gym? You tell me which one I chose tonight…

Eat a dough ball before or after working out? Duh, both! But specifically before…where else do you get the energy to put in a 57 minute workout?! And then again after…to refuel 😉

Q: What’s another “would you rather” that you like?!? + answer one from above. Go!!!!

road trips

The first thing that comes to mind when I think ‘road tripping’ is food. But, more importantly, I want to tell you why road trips are something that are special/enjoyable for the husband and I.

My husband was notoriously referred to as the gypsy by his family before I even knew him. Reason being, he was always on the road. I never really caught on to why they called him that, until I was always in the car next to him, gradually turning into a gypsy myself. And, like him, I totally enjoyed it.

If it weren’t for our love of traveling and road tripping, it might never have led us to multiple trips down to Florida – one of them happening to be our engagement.

They say, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and that is exactly what happened in the above situation. The husband had traveled down to Florida for the winter, so he could continue to improve his golf game, while I stayed back in Canada. Even though I made frequent trips down, the husband realized that he couldn’t be without me, and proposed! This is why Florida is one of our all-time favourite places to be!

We continued to make frequent trips down to Florida because it was the easiest decision for us to make to have not only gotten engaged there, but get married there as well!

This also meant lots of road tripping for friends and family, too! 🙂

Road tripping is not something we’ve only experienced on this continent, but in Australia, as well! We made the decision to travel there after our honeymoon, and it’s one of the best decisions we’ve ever made!

The hardest part about road tripping in Australia is adapting to driving on the wrong side of the car and the wrong side of the road.

But the true gypsies that we are had it in us to make it work 😉

Had we not decided to road trip halfway across the world, we would have never:

Met new friends.

Ride in new ways.

And, saw new creatures (no sharks thank goodness)!

And, we all know that road tripping in Australia would not be a complete road trip without having a camper van (or two) at some point.

Conveniently, this was actually the cheapest method that allowed us to travel up and down the east coast of Australia. The one above (our first camper van) was manageable, but our second one was a beast. The husband would have been scared enough to drive it in North America, but now put this beast on the other side of the road and give him the most narrow and curvy roads possible. It makes you appreciate us making it home safe and sound!

Our road tripping did not end after Australia. We came home for two weeks, then as quickly as we got off the road/plane, we were back on the road. This time, we were traveling out west.

This meant driving from Ontario to British Columbia – which is where we lived in the spring/summer/fall of 2010.

And after our less than a year stay there, we were driving back east, which takes us to now.

[source]

Road tripping was not only about the amazing places and things we got to see, but being each other’s best company. Had I done all these things with someone else (I know that doesn’t sound fitting for the getting engaged and married part, but still haha), it would not have been as amazing as it was. No amount of kilometers we put on our jeep or frequent gas fill-ups or flight costs could have made me change how we have lived together as a couple thus far. I’d actually do it all again, if I could, plus more!

And although I originally wanted to make this post today since the husband and I will be road tripping later this afternoon, it is nowhere near the magnitude of the road trips’ above. Nonetheless, it still makes you appreciate the time in the car you have with the someone you love. 🙂

And I’m always one step ahead, thinking about the next road trip we can take together. That cruise in December can’t come quick enough!

WIAW: slow-poke edition!

How on earth can you forget what happens on Wednesday’s?! I definitely never do each time, yet somehow I’ve missed the past few weeks since I joined the club (oops!). But here I am, back at it. Just a wee bit of a slow-poke to get the ball rollin’ for taking pics and posting them ;).

Breakfast:

Lunch:

  • Leftovah soup from din the other night {butternut squash, sweet potato and brie}.

  • Salsa and chips (not pictured).

Dinner:

  • Ezekiel wrap with all the fixin’s: sunflower seed spread, sunflower seed sprouts, yellow bell pepper, avocado, tomato, cucumber and shredded carrot.

Snacks:

  • Cherries.

  • Apple.

  • Vanilla Greek yogurt + blueberries

  • Iced coffee + almond milk (and yes…this totally counts as a ‘snack’)

  • Chocolate (durrr).
There you have it…my eats from a previous day. Now, let’s see I can be on the ball  next week. Either way, at least I got my WIAW in on the actual day :).
