1) Empty tea mug. When are they going to invent auto-refill ones!

2) MAC Cosmetic palettes. I admit, I was kind of lazy from the weekend and am just getting around to unpacking them (it was girl’s night on Friday – hence the make-up).

3) A book I borrowed from the library (super nerd, I know!) and it’s home is on the ground when not being read (along with the other 30 I took out – complete super nerd now).

Name 2 foods you can’t live without

  • Peanut butter – my fave is from the Bulk Barn. It’s the organic all-natural and it’s sooooo delicious. I could eat it everyday and think about the whole time I’m not eating it!
  • Pomegranate – it’s probably my favourite fruit for many reasons; I like to pick things, so give me a fruit with a million tiny seeds and I’m a happy girl! Also, nutritionally, it is high in antioxidants.

Notice how both of my fave foods start with a ‘P’ – not planned at all, I swear!

Name 2 things you can’t live without

  •  These kind of questions are tough for me because I want to be a smart bum and say food and water…because technically, you can’t live without them (or at least water…). So for that, yes, I will say water. I can’t live without water. I love it more than a normal person should love water. It makes me possessive (the husband knows what I’m talking about – don’t sip from my cup of water!) and makes me antsy when I don’t have some. If ever we’re traveling the hubby knows to have me nice and stocked!
  • My laptop – I know I could live without it, but it does help me with a lot of things…like this blog for instance! I think I’m not alone when I say that I’d feel lost without it!

Name 2 people you can’t live without

  • My husband. 

He is my everything and to be honest…the only one who could probably put up with me! I don’t know how he does it, but he’s an amazing man for that reason! He’s a busy working golf pro, but fits in time just for us (look at #5)!

  • The second person would have to be plural…personsssss. As in, the fam. I can’t decide who’s more important to be listed here and for that reason I chose no one! They all are important – that’s why they’re family! Especially this little one…

Wished the little sis a happy birthday, put on much needed laundry and sweat my brains out because it’s fiiiiiinally hot here in Ontario!! 

Name 2 things you learned from the healthy blogging community

  • You learn from others about great healthy foods – it’s great seeing how other bloggers use foods and what they eat. I like the people I follow because they’re real. They tell you what they eat and what they do – they aren’t afraid to admit if they were having a lazy day or ate some dessert!! Those are amazing real people :)!!!
  • You’re not alone – you realize that your struggles are other people’s struggles and that you have rocks in the blogging community. Even though it’s all virtual if you care about other bloggers, they genuinely care about you back and it’s a great feeling!

And remember, it’s WHT Wednesday tomorrow! Also tomorrow, I’m going to attempt to run in my first race. It’s a 10K and I’m kind of nervous. To prep for it, I thought it was time to take my running off the treadmill and into the real world. Even though it was about 28 degrees celcius yesterday, I managed to run a nice 5.4 miles in mid-afternoon. I came back looking like I had just showered and had a face as red as a tomato. I’m taking today off just so I don’t overdo it, but am excited for tomorrow 😀


‘whatever happened to…’ wednesday!

Welcome to my brand new feature on the blog… ‘Whatever Happened To…” Wednesdays. As soon as the thought came in my head, I knew I had to do it.

Now, as a foodie, you’d probably expect most of my WHT’s to be about food, but let’s face it, there’s way too many other ‘special’ things out there to ignore. Food will be on here, but I had to start the first one off with this gem.

Now, I was born in 1986, so my childhood years were spent in the 90’s. I hope most others can appreciate some of the fads that I’ve been through, and can sadly admit that they went through them as well (and feel free to email me WHT items that you want to see on here that may differ).

This one featured tonight was a big one for me…and actually talking about old fads kinda makes me sad that this one had to leave, or I had to grow up (who knows which one came first). I’d totally still rock it today if they were around…and wouldn’t be ashamed. At all.

The Nano!

Don’t pretend like you never had/wanted one.

I started off with a dog nano (only because they were sold out of the baby one at Toys ‘R Us at the time) and upgraded to the baby not long after. This was the shiznit for me. Does any of this ring a bell to you?

If your baby pooped, you cleaned it up. Thank you for making me a caretaker so young in life, nano.

The Tamagotchi!

Sorry for the tamagotchi lovers, but I had friends with them, and even my dog nano kicked a tamagotchi’s butt…and don’t even get me started on how much more awesome the baby nano was than this thing!

And there you have it. The nano. The tamagotchi. Both legends of a pre-teen’s life.

Don’t lie – you liked it a little and also made you wonder where these guys did go.

Now, please excuse while I go dig through old boxes to find my purple baby nano and lime green dog nano (that’s right, I remember their colours). I’m just kidding, because that would be weird and honestly, a little creepy. Plus, like any good kid, I broke my nanos way before their peak.

Rest in peace dear nanos, rest in peace.

bar day

There’s nothing like turning to a bar in the middle of the day! It makes you feel great; a warm, fuzzy feeling comes over you.

A bar makes you want to drink something nice and refreshing. It makes you want to call your friends and come enjoy with you because it’s just not as fun alone. But, I mean I totally enjoy it alone all the time. In fact, being alone might actually be better…so scratch the friends. Please tell me you didn’t already call them!

Bars can increase your friendliness, and take it away just as quickly as it came. They can make you social, or make you want to tuck away in a corner. Bars can bring out so many different sides of you! Oh bars…

I just enjoy bars sooo much for all those reasons and might even call myself a baroholic.






And you thought I meant a place for drinking alcoholic beverages…silly readers! No, no, no! I do love the odd drink once in a while, but it’s normally not at the bar anymore…remember, I just turned ancient last Monday.

After tackling that to do list I set for myself today (I almost got all of it complete!), I came home and started on the bars. Today’s feature was Angela’s Strawberry Oat Bar and a date bar that I googled, and thought it looked like the best one.

I tell ya…Angela sure knows how to put together some amazing recipes; this one made my day and many others. I met the hubby at the gym after work and brought some bars for him and his friend.

Let’s just say, the bars will be making a reappearance. Maybe in different flava-flaves with summer coming!

The date bars I made were also delicious, but the focus of the pictures was definitely on these bad boys!

Good thing I accomplished the main goal of getting the groceries to make this possible. The ingredients for bars wasn’t the only thing I picked up…

I became an excited foodie today (or at least that’s what I’m calling myself); I found nutritional yeast at a price that I was actually willing to pay. Now, I’ve never used it before, but I tell ya, I can’t wait to use it, and I will find recipes!

Walnuts, gluten-free chips, new razor.

Broc, a few new larabars to spice up my selection, crispy, hard grapes (the only way I like ’em), pears and cilantro.

Rice chips, peppaaahhs (jalapeno and bell), an avo, green beans, rice cheese, onion, limes (for mojitos…not kidding), organic carrots, coconut milk, greek yogurt (honey flavour to die for!) and organic black beans for black bean burgers that I made tonight.

I, sadly, didn’t take any pics of the burgers tonight, but need to get a shot of the leftovers tomorrow because they were so delicious and could honestly keep me ever needing to eat meat!

Time to go enjoy time with the hubby – good thing for the bball game which allowed me to squeeze this blog post in ;)!

my tuesday plans

The hubby and I have gotten in the habit of writing out our goals – well, it actually comes in waves. Needless to say, we’re back on the goal kick! In fact, I might make a ‘goal’ page just to stay utterly committed to reaching my goals – the big and the small! Like today, my goals aren’t huge, but they need to be done. Here they are:

  • Mail income tax
  • Call the learning centre that I took my chem courses through to get transcripts sent to my university ASAP!!
  • Get groceries – especially the things needed for baking and making dinner for today/tonight
  • Workout/run
  • Get water – I love this water
  • Go to the health food store to get coconut milk
  • Finish making a wheatberry salad…cooked them up yesterday
  • Maybe look for a dress for Friday’s festivities (aka girl’s night downtown)!!!
  • Go to the Bulk Barn – will hold off til later since I know the sis wants to go with me!

how to spend your free time

Even though I just came out of a 10 day on work cycle, I don’t actually consider it a 10 day work cycle. I mean, three of those days were spent sitting in a classroom learning about WHMIS. It was probably the most painstaking information about WHIMIS ever. So yes, sitting in a classroom for eight hours times three days hardly counts towards an overly exhausted Char. The reason I am so tired is because seven of those 10 days, I had to be up before 5am; it eventually caught up with me.

So here it is…what I do to relax/do nothing on a day off.

{Note: it’s a holiday in Canada so even though I would like to go and get some errands done…nothing is open!}

Today started with sleeping in. This was foreign to me, so I thoroughly enjoyed it. After I overstayed my welcome in bed, I got up and headed downstairs for some much needed:

Tea!! It’s from David’s Tea and I was drinking Happy Kombucha. And how can you not love the Eeyore mug? Also from the kitchen:

A fruit medley! Yes…it can still be a medley with only two kinds of fruit.

Alright, so I lounge in them everyday. Give me a break!

A day off is also spent soaking wheat berries to try a new recipe with them and cooking with them for the first time ever.


And more eating…

You can’t really mess up a relaxing day! I plan to do some sort of exercise today, but the lounging part is just going too well right now.

Big news: I have a brand spankin’ new blog idea that I will be sharing on Wednesday!!

Why Wednesday? Because it works with the ‘W’ and ya, that’s basically my only reason. But I promise that it’s cool and it actually involves others to join in!

the way i roll

I figured out that there’s no ‘perfect’ way for me to be a blogger. Some weeks I’m right into it, posting and reading other blogs almost every hour of the day. Other weeks, I’m MIA and my Google Reader number could give you a hernia.

It’s just the way I roll.

I like being more involved in the blog world and keeping up-to-date with what other bloggers are doing, but sometimes you just need to say no to technology. This week I worked 52 hours…and I’m not quite there yet; I have another 7 to go tomorrow. This meant technology needed a break while I bashed my head into a wall for working 10 straight days in a row.

You can kinda see how blogs just didn’t fit in. My little extra time was devoted to the husband (can’t blame a girl) and sleeping, which if it weren’t for it, I might have killed someone at work…just kidding.

So for my absence, I need to go back. Last post was on Sunday, aka the day before my big 25th birthday. NBD…it was on a Monday AND I had to be up at 4:45am the next day. All the essentials for a non-partying night.

After an 8 hour day of orientation (so you caught me, those 52 hours weren’t ALL spent working), I came home, relaxed with the hubby, then he took me out for a nice dinner.

We went to a local restaurant that I’ve never been to before. I don’t know why I haven’t, but let me tell you, it was worth the wait.

It’s name is Greystones and it was delicious. I had the special, which was grouper topped with a crab cake with a spicy aioli and the hubby had the prime rib.

My din was soooo good. It had a great kick, which is exactly what I like, and just paired so well with the grouper and crab cake. I can’t believe we had never went to this hidden gem! We will definitely be back as the husband said it was the best steak he’s had!

There’s something about going out to eat that really makes me want wine. I don’t know what it is, but wine +dining out = happy Char. I definitely like it more than drinking wine at home…I know, I don’t get it either!

Maybe the need for wine that night stemmed from the fact that I was having mixed emotions about turning 25.

Who knows…

We got the waitress to snap one pic of the two of us just to document that we actually do eat dinners together. It’s not just mysteriously me, all alone, eating solo…or vice versa.

We also got a little post-dinner photo going on as well, with crazy cat in the background.

Other than my birthday Monday…here’s what I’ve been going through:
Orientation for job potential: 6:30am-2:30pm

Orientation again: 6:30am-2:30pm
Actual job: 4:30-8pm 

Last day of orientation: 6:30am-2:30pm

Job: 4:30-8pm
*Yes, technically I had all morning off, but it was occupied with getting the stuff I need to hopefully get the other job that I attended orientation for (hello doctor for signing a piece of paper basically saying I can stand for 8 hours and grip items…thank you!) 

Work: 7:30am-2:30pm

Work: 7:30am-2:30pm

And then finally tomorrow, I work same shift as the two immediate ones above, then off for two days. I. Cannot. Wait.

There you have it….52 hours. What doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger…and by this I mean lots of caffeine!

life is what you make it

I don’t wanna get all philosophical on you all, but life is what you make it.

Like, waking up at 6am on a Sunday to go to work. Not ideal, but sometimes you gotta do it! Waking up today I had the choice, to either hate my life for being up that early on a Sunday or suck it up, put a smile on and do my job regardless of the day – I chose the latter.

The reason I made the most of it was not because I stayed up a little later than I had planned the night before, yet didn’t feel that tired upon waking. Not because I enjoy my job regardless of the day or time I work. And finally, not because the hubby was also up at the same time to go to work as well; yet those are all good reasons to not mind going to work.

I chose to enjoy the day and smile because I was motivated.

On a good day I can make it to work in 35mins, but on a bad normal day, it’s just over 40mins. In those 35-40mins x 2 for the ‘there’ and ‘back’ trip, I finally got to a point where I’m tired of listening to the same repeated songs on the radio – this had been going on for a few weeks now.

Yesterday while driving to work listening to the same overplayed songs on the radio, I looked in the middle compartment of my jeep, where I noticed my ipod. I decided to turn said ipod on to see if it was dead (which is normally why it’s stored away), but this time it was fully charged. Instead of listening to old un-updated songs on the ipod, I turned on an audio motivational segment by Brian Tracy on self-discipline. If you’ve never listened to him, go do it…NOW!

That audio was an hour, which was perfect; listened to half on the way to work and half on the way home. One thing stood out specifically to me today at work…

He talks about going to work, to work – simple, right? I don’t think so. Most of us go to work but don’t fully work…I decided to not be that person today. I worked, and worked, and worked. I had no regrets for working hard, and I actually felt good about going and doing just that.

Which brings me back to life is what you make it. I made it fun. To continue with the fun, I showed my hubby, mom and sister some funny youtube videos that my friend showed me last night. I thought I’d continue the fun and post it on here! They’re super cute and I hope you enjoy.
